Book description

It is the year 2063. Jeremy wants a Pan Limbic Universal Gadget (PLUG) in the worst way. How else can he compete with his plugged-in peers and become a famous astrophysicist when he grows up? But his parents have other ideas, including a secret genetic project which promises to unlock paranormal traits in their children as they enter puberty. A project which might explain the large number of near fatal accidents Jeremy has survived since infancy. A project easily invaded by evil forces. Project Paranormal is a mixture of time travel, an immortal evil spirit, and politics.

As I wrote Project Paranormal, I had in mind that my main protagonist would be an “everyman” or in Jeremy Cay’s case an “everyboy” who becomes extraordinary because of the difficult choices he must make due to the times he’s born into, the people who surround him, and the choices he makes. Jeremy turns thirteen in chapter one and must solve mysteries such as who is he, what gifts does he have, why would a renowned geneticist want to tutor him, is his eight year old sister’s imaginary world actually real, and why does someone from the future want him dead? Project Paranormal is meant to be the first book in a series of science fiction/fantasy books involving Jeremy Cay, his friends, and his relatives and how they wind up living on Galatia, a planet filled with magic in another universe.

As I see it, the central question of the series involves kennst gene pedigrees and politics. How do kennst gene pedigrees influence politics? How does politics exploit kennst gene pedigrees? So the relationships of the characters matter. The fact that some (e.g. Mary and Gregory) can see possible futures drives decisions made by those characters. Mary has to go to Galatia or she will die young on Earth. One of the reasons why she would die young if she remained on Earth is because of her disabilities. Lucifer’s future plan for “relocation” is similar to Hitler’s death camps. It will be his intent to purge “weak” individuals like Mary from the human population. Lucifer attempts to control American politics so he can achieve his idea of utopia, a human population without genetic flaws completely under his control. The fact that Jeremy has to decide between staying with Mary and fighting Lucifer will drive him throughout the series.

Inspiration for my Folding Space series came from my observations of how scientists interact with each other at meetings. In short, they are more than the ideas and theories they project; they are flawed people with children, spouses, students, post-docs, and problems stemming from political associations within their field, universities, and the world at large.
